Lessons Learned From A Migraine Weekend

by J. Lynne on Sunday, 2009 August 9

I’ve had a migraine all weekend; I actually woke up with it on Friday.  Then it was what I consider manageable.  I went to work and would have stayed all day but I seemed to be allergic to something in the office because I started itching around my wrists slightly before lunch and by 1:30 it was bright red itchy all the way up my arms.  So, I left early after wiping my whole desk down with cleaning stuff.

Anyway. the migraine has just gotten worse all weekend and I’ve practically exhausted my painkiller stockpile — you know, anything left over from post-surgery or post ED visits plus the last few Oxycodone I had for migraines.  It’s been unmanageable, which means even daily routine can’t be kept up.    I haven’t even been able to go out to the mailbox to get Saturday’s mail.

I could really have used some ice cream this weekend (the frozen goodness helps, especially when the migraine is accompanied by a flushed aura), but the small pint of SO Delicious Strawberry soymilk ice cream I bought on Monday didn’t make it to the weekend.  That’s the trouble with Strawberry. And this weekend I realized that unlike previous to this little experiment, I can’t just run to the Rite Aid down the road for Ben & Jerry’s  and a chocolate bar anymore.  The nearest soy ice cream is at least 15 – 20 minutes away and the nearest nondairy “milk” chocolate bar is 45 minutes away.  That’s not exactly a migraine-friendly or eco-friendly drive.  I’m going to have to start stocking up at Whole Foods just in case for these kinds of things.  That requires forethought and planning ahead.  Gah.

Anyway, the weekend was wasted.  I meant to spend it planning out a menu and cleaning house.  Good thing I have plenty of food to last probably most of next week.  I just would like to stop to pick up some mellon, hummus, and some veggies.  I do want to try some green smoothies.  I’m getting plenty of fruit and protein in, but I’ve been a little light this past week on veggies because I wasn’t feeling well and the salads felt too heavy — I’m pretty sure my gastroparesis has been acting up for the last 3 or 4 weeks, so I’ve been turning more and more to foods that are water-based or broth soups.  Basically, anything that doesn’t sit in my stomach all day and feel like it’s still digesting the next day.  I’ve started taking Digest Gold enzymes, which are vegan and was recommended to me by the clerk at Whole Foods, to help improve my digestion; at least that’s what I’m hoping.

I’m ready to start feeling better.
