The Green Smoothie Experiment

by J. Lynne on Tuesday, 2009 August 11

In an effort to get some more veggies in and reduce the amount of solid food I’m eating, this morning I tried out one of those green smoothies I’ve been reading so much about all over the internet lately.  I put just enough water to cover the blades in my VitaMix and added 4 leaves of Kale, 2 bananas, a whole apple (seeds, peel, and all), half a tray of ice cubes, and a splash of agave (because I was worried about the flavor and agave always seems to make it better).  In less than 30 seconds I had a pretty green smoothie, though it wasn’t as thick or icy as I like them to be — I’ll need to freeze the bananas to add iciness and maybe consider adding soy yogurt for some thickness in the future.

Anyway, the whole thing fit nicely in one of my 32oz to-go bottles.  I used the green one because I thought the green smoothie would look strange in the orange bottle.  It was quite delicious.  There was no bitter taste at all like I sort of expected.  Next time I’ll leave the agave out and add red grapes.

The real issue I had with it was that it didn’t keep me full until lunch.  I drank it around 8:30am and by 11am, I was famished.  I don’t normally eat my lunch until noonish, but I was getting light-headed from the need to eat.  Maybe it was the lack of yogurt?  Maybe I should add some oatmeal into the mix to give it some bulk?

Oh, and while I was sniffing around the web for information about green smoothies, I discovered that this Saturday, August 15th, is International Green Smoothie Day!  It’s not actually just one day, it’s a three day challenge complete with contests and prizes; plus 60% of the cost of each $5 admission goes to “support a crew of vegan, whale-saving sailors under the guidance on Captain Paul Watson and the Sea Shepherd Organization.”  I think I might try it.
